The UFC Fight Night 128 Weigh-in was rocky today as Kevin Lee missed weight (coming in at 157 pounds) which momentarily put the main event in jeopardy. Thankfully, Edson Barboza agreed to stay on the card so the fight will remain intact with 20% of Lee’s purse going to Barboza.
This sure puts a damper on Kevin Lee’s title aspirations even should he win tomorrow night. Following Dustin Poirier’s big victory last weekend, Lee was going to need a perfect weekend to leapfrog other contenders. He certainly didn’t help his cause with some of the comments leading up to today where he campaigned on The MMA Hour that “Poirier is not a championship level fighter”.
While this is a bad look for Kevin Lee, the most important thing right now for Lee is that he is still fighting and a win for either man will engrave them in a top 5 spot. We have seen Khabib miss weight and bounce back so Lee just needs to stay the course and make weight the next time. The stakes are still high for this fight as the loser will have lost two in a row and probably be the forgotten man needing several wins to work their way back up.
Other Notes
– Aspen Ladd missed weight for her UFC debut coming in at 137.8, missing the 136 limit. Leslie Smith declined to take 20% of her purse and continue the fight. This fight has now been removed from the card.
– Magomed Bibulatov vs Ulka Sasaki has also been scrapped from the event after Bibulatov was deemed medically unfit to fight.
