UFC 235 is just a few hours away and man can this card potentially give us multiple storylines. Not only is the main card stacked, but there’s a fight on every card that can excite you. Unfortunately, the Marlon Vera vs Franke Saenz fight was scratched due to illness on Vera’s part. Hopefully, Vera can turn the corner quickly as he was previously on a hot streak.
However, I think the night’s biggest anticipation has to be the UFC debut of Ben Askren. Askren (18-0) will face off against “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (28-12). Lawler returns to the Octagon after his fight against Rafael dos Anjos on Dec. 17, 2017. Although exciting to watch fight, Lawler doesn’t give much leading up to the fight. Askren, on the other hand, is a one man entertainment show. Along with Colby Colby Covington, Askren has set his sights on Dana White and poor Kamaru Usman. I don’t know what Usman has done to deserve the hate but hate he has received. Askren and Usman are former collegiate wrestlers and back on the collegiate circuit, Usman was known as “Marty”.
Askren likes to remind the Nigerian Nightmare every chance he gets that his name was Marty. Nigerian Nightmare – definitely scared. Marty – ehh I think I can take him. Usman hasn’t taken kindly to Askren’s undermining troll job and they’ve had a few spats online and in person. Covington showed up at Usman’s workouts with a bullhorn and belt. Woodley questioned Usman’s confidence. That’s a lot of punches coming from all directions and the domino effect all started with Askren.
No one is safe – certainly not Marty and not Dana White. As of Wednesday, Feb. 27, Askren was asked if he could see a friendship form between him and White. Askren remarked to MMA that “Wild shit happens in the world, but that would be one of the wildest,“Wouldn’t that be wild?”
If Askren puts on a show on Saturday, White won’t be able to ignore him for too long and neither will Marty.
